If you have searched the Play Store for Free Fire India even once in the last three years, you know the feeling. You type the name, you hope, and there is nothing to install. Thumbnails shout a new date every month, and the game never arrives. This time it is different, because the news comes from Garena itself: Free Fire India is coming on 28 October 2026. Here is what is real, what is still unknown, and what to do on launch day.

The short answer

Garena has confirmed that Free Fire India will be free to download from Wednesday, 28 October 2026, on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. It is a standalone app made specially for India, not the old game simply switched back on. The launch opens with a Diwali in-game campaign running until 15 November, and the game is optimised for a broad range of phones.

Why does India need its own version?

Free Fire was one of India’s biggest mobile games before February 2022, when the government blocked it with 53 other apps over security concerns. It vanished from Indian app stores overnight.

Free Fire MAX, the better-graphics version, was not part of that block and stayed available. That is how Indian players kept playing. Tournaments kept running, and Indian teams returned to international events. But MAX was always the workaround. Free Fire India is meant to be the homecoming: a version built for this country, with Indian servers, local events, and safety features shaped around Indian rules.

The three-year wait

  • 31 August 2023: Garena announces Free Fire India for 5 September, with MS Dhoni as brand ambassador and Indian players’ data stored on local servers run by Yotta, an Indian cloud company.
  • 4 September 2023: A day before launch, Garena postpones it, saying it needs “a few more weeks” to refine the game and finish localising it. No new date follows.
  • September–October 2026: Signs of life. The Play Store page is updated, a “coming soon” teaser appears, and on 26 October Garena renames its Indian YouTube channels to Free Fire India Official and Free Fire India Esports. On 27 October, Garena posts the video “FREE FIRE INDIA IS HERE!” and a press announcement follows the same day.

Three years of “a few more weeks.” No wonder players learned to wait for proof instead of promises.

What is confirmed — and what is not

Confirmed

  • Launch date: 28 October 2026, on Android and iOS, free to download — confirmed by Garena’s own video and announcement on 27 October.
  • Safety features: Parental consent for under-18s, break reminders, playtime limits and spending caps, shaped with feedback from Indian government stakeholders.
  • Indian servers: The game will be hosted on servers in India, with enhanced data protection.
  • Local events: Campaigns based on Indian festivals and cultures, starting with the Diwali campaign until 15 November.
  • Esports support: Garena will keep backing Indian esports, from grassroots and college competitions to international tournaments.

Not confirmed yet

  • The exact unlock time on 28 October — Garena has given the date, not the hour.
  • Whether your Free Fire MAX progress, items and purchases carry over.
  • Whether Free Fire MAX keeps running in India after Free Fire India launches.
  • Download size and minimum phone requirements.

If someone in your squad claims to know any of these, ask where Garena said it.

What to do on launch day

Keep it simple, and keep your account safe. Launch days bring out every scam in the book.

  • Download only from the official stores. On Google Play, check the developer name is Garena International III before tapping install. As of 27 October there was no install button yet and no public App Store page, so if you cannot find it in the morning, wait rather than hunting elsewhere.
  • Do not download APK files from Telegram, WhatsApp forwards or random websites. They can carry malware, and unofficial versions can get your account restricted. Garena only ever asks you to sign in through the game’s own screens.
  • Do not trust “account transfer” offers. Nobody can migrate your MAX account for you, and nobody legitimate will ask for your login, OTP or password.
  • If you are under 18, or a parent: expect the parental consent step and the playtime and spending limits. They are part of the game this time. Set them up honestly on day one instead of fighting them later.

A small, real example

Picture a college student who has played Free Fire MAX since school, with the same squad and the same login, and three years of skins and memories on that account. For that player, the biggest question on 28 October is not how the game looks. It is whether all of that history comes along. Garena has not answered that yet. So sign in the same way you always have and see what Garena itself shows you — before believing any video that promises a transfer bonus.

What to watch next

Three things will show how serious this return is: whether the game actually goes live on 28 October after the 2023 postponement, what Garena says about MAX accounts in the first few days, and whether the safety features work smoothly or push younger players towards unofficial versions. Those answers will arrive quickly, and they matter more than launch-day hype.

One last thought

For three years, “Free Fire India kab aa rahi hai” was a question with no answer, asked in comment sections and group chats across the country. Now it has a date, a video from Garena itself, and a download that opens tomorrow. That does not erase the wait, and it does not answer every question. But the waiting is finally over. Download it from the official store, keep your account safe, set your limits, and enjoy the game you have been asking for. Play that first match like someone who waited three years for it — because you did.

The 28 October 2026 date, safety features and Diwali campaign are as announced by Garena; the unlock time, Free Fire MAX account carryover, the future of Free Fire MAX in India, and download size remain unconfirmed.
